White boxer briefs - when dark underwear will not do

White underwear often gets passed over because it looks like hard work. And yes, it asks a little more of you than black does. But there are situations where white is the only right answer, and once you know them, it is an easy call.

When white beats black

Under light trousers. This is the main reason. Black underwear under white, beige or pale linen trousers shows through clearly - even when the fabric feels thick enough. White underwear under white fabric disappears.

In summer. Light colours take up less heat than dark ones. The difference under a layer of trousers is not dramatic, but it is there, and on the really hot days you notice it.

With light suits. Same principle as light trousers, just with more at stake.

About the yellowing - honestly

White underwear yellows. Not because it is poor quality, but because sweat, skin oils and detergent residue build up in the fibres over time. That applies to every material.

What you can do: wash whites separately at 40 degrees, dose the detergent as instructed rather than adding extra, and skip the fabric softener - it settles as a film in the fabric and binds exactly the things that cause the yellow tone. Dry them in the sun if you can, which has a bleaching effect. Leave out chlorine bleach, which breaks down the bamboo viscose fibres and makes things worse in the long run.

With that routine a white 3-pack keeps well for a couple of years. Without it, it keeps for a season.
